It was first released as a beta version for Microsoft Windows on September 2, 2008, and the public stable release was on December 11, 2008. The name is derived from the graphical user interface frame, or "chrome", of web browsers. In April 2009, Chrome was the fourth most widely used browser, with 1.42% of worldwide usage share of web browsers.

Chromium is the open source project behind Google Chrome. The Google-authored portion of it is released under the BSD license, with other parts being subject to a variety of different permissive open-source licenses, including the MIT License, the LGPL, the Ms-PL and a MPL/GPL/LGPL tri-license. It implements the same feature set as Chrome, but has a slightly different logo.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5

AVG released AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 on March 2, 2009. AVG Free Edition 8.5 continues using the more colorful interface and combined Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware protection engine introduced in the AVG 8.0 product range in April 2008. However, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 added the LinkScanner Active Surf-Shield safe surfing protection, which was previously only available in AVG commercial versions.
There are some limitations with AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 compared to the commercial versions of AVG products. These limitations include:
Less protection – AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 provides the same anti-virus and anti-spyware scanning engine as the commercial product; however, it lacks anti-rootkit. The older 7.5 Free Edition is perfectly capable of finding and disabling rootkits based on signatures, but cannot scan for rootkit-like activity. The 8.5 version of AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition version lacks any anti-rootkit capability. While there is no official protection for files from messaging sources, the Resident Shield component automatically scans files before they are opened or copied.
Infrequent updates – AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 receives updates via a lower priority service. Priority updating via high-speed servers is only available for the commercial versions of AVG products.
No telephone or e-mail technical support – There is no telephone or e-mail technical support provided by AVG for users of AVG Free Edition products anywhere in the world. AVG Free Edition users have access to support via the self-help AVG Free Forum.
Less customization – Scheduling options in AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 are very limited (only one scheduled update per day, one scheduled scan per day etc.). However, the AVG Resident Shield configuration allows exclusions. The on-demand/scheduled scanner allows advanced testing options such as heuristics and reporting of password-protected archives reporting. Process priority for on-demand/scheduled scans can be dynamically adjusted over three different configurations.
No server support – AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 cannot be installed on server operating systems (such as Windows Server 2003), nor can it be used for the scanning of network drives.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 is only licensed for home and non-commercial use on a single computer.
AVG Free Edition was once responsible for popup ads advertising the non-free versions of AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 and AVG Internet Security 8.0, which claim to provide more comprehensive levels of protection. Current free versions display only in-program banner ads for the full edition, not popups.

VLC Player

VLC Player

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen.

“A good Player for your video files”

When it comes to video files, nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Thankfully, VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently.
Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.

Deep Freeze

Deep Freeze, by Faronics, is an application suite for Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. Deep Freeze gives administrators the ability to protect the core operating system files and configuration files of an environment without eliminating the usability for (most) end users.

Advantages

Deep Freeze protects the computer by utilizing a separate partition on the hard disk drive for write back. When the computer is rebooted, this partition is treated empty again and existing information on it is unaccessible. This allows users to make 'virtual' changes to the system, giving them the appearance that they can modify core files or even delete them, and even make the system unusable to themselves, but upon reboot the 'frozen' state of the operating system is restored.
To make changes, a system administrator must 'thaw' the system partition, make any needed changes, and 'freeze' it again. These changes are saved to the protected partition instead of the 'thawed' write back partition.

Disadvantages

While Deep Freeze will allow users to have the comfort of virtually modifying the system as they like, it does not control the programming of individual applications that are installed. If, for example, a user account under Windows is a 'limited' account, regardless if the users can actually affect some files or not, some application installers will assume the user can not and inform them they must be an administrator. In some applications, this can be bypassed by working in 'Windows 98 Compatibility mode', which has no such user restrictions that programs typically mind, but many application installers still find trouble with this.
Deep Freeze only protects the operating system in a 'fresh booted' state. The protections the software offers can often be bypassed, for example, by installing a malicious, system wide application, especially if other users find this application popular and accept that it being installed when they log in means it is authentic. One user could install a modified version of a popular web browser that's been designed to save passwords to a server on the internet, then log out, then other users who log in would see that browser and may use it out of preference. To use the computer more safely, the user would have to restart the computer first.
Deep Freeze also can not protect against direct access to a disk drive when the hosting operating system is not in control of the system. That is, if another operating system can be boot from another hard disk, a USB device, or optical media, they will have real access to the contents of the frozen and thawed partitions. This may be protected against by setting the first hard disk as the only bootable hard disk and password protecting the BIOS configuration, but if physical access to the computer is available, this can be bypassed with a BIOS reset or rearranging the hard drive installation.
