DISABLE AUTOPLAY IN WINDOWS XP
It is safest to disable CD autoplay in XP using either local group policy or, for an enterprise, an Active Directory group policy. The local group policy editor method:
· Click Start
· Click Run
· EnterGPEDIT.MSC Group Policy mmc will popup. On left panel:
· Double-click Computer Configuration to open submenu
· Double-click Administrative Templates to open submenu
· Double-click System to open submenu
· Double-click Turn autoplay off option which will be near the bottom of the list in the right panel.
The default is the Not configured. Set it to Enabled.
How To Enable Or Disable - CD Rom Auto-Play
Microsoft Windows provides us with an Auto-Play feature, which allows your CD Roms to begin playing automatically upon their insertion. This is true whether you insert an Audio CD or a Data CD. In the case of inserting an Audio CD, the first song will begin playing automatically. In the case of inserting a Data CD, one will usually see a program launching an Installation Screen.
This Auto-Play feature can be beneficial to you or it can be rather annoying depending on your circumstances. For instance, if your using a CD Burner to make a copy of a CD Rom and the Auto-Play function initiates itself, then the entire copy process can halt and possibly destroy your destination disk. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to enable and/or disable this Auto-Play feature to meet your specific needs.
For Windows XP
1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop until it opens.
2. Then gently click on your CD / DVD Rom Drive just until it becomes highlighted.
3. Then click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
4. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Properties.
5. Then click on the Auto Play tab at the top of the screen.
6. You can adjust settings for Music CDs, Music Files, Pictures, Video Files and Mixed Content.
7. Now select a multimedia type by using the pull down arrow to the right with your mouse.
8. Then for each multimedia type, use your mouse to encircle the Select an action to perform: option.
9. To disable that multimedia type, click on the Take no action icon at the bottom of the screen.
10. Now click on the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.
11. Continue in the above fashion for each multimedia type, choosing the Take no action option.
12. And ensure that you click on the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.
13. Once all options have been set, then click on OK button to exit the CD Drive Properties window.
14. Repeat the above procedure on any additional CD Rom Drives you have in your system.
15. Note: If you feel you have made a mistake, you can click on the Restore Defaults icon at any time.
FOR WIN98 AND MILLENIUM
1. Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
2. Then click on Settings and then click on the Control Panel icon.
3. Now Double click on the System icon to open up the System Properties window.
4. Then click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the screen.
5. Now click on the plus sign [+] next to the CD ROM Icon to expand that section.
6. Then Double click on your CD Rom / DVD Rom Drive to display its Properties window.
7. Then click on the Settings tab at the top of the screen.
8. Within the Options section, you will see a white box next to Auto insert notification.
9. Placing a check mark into this box will enable the Auto insert notification.
10. Clearing an existing check mark from this box will disable the Auto insert notification.
11. Then click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen to save your settings.
12. And then click on the Close button to exit the System Properties Window.
13. Select Yes when Windows Prompts you to Restart your Computer now.
14. Repeat the above procedure on any additional CD Rom Drives you have in your system.
